Description

Mostly at the very top of the main ridge, with magnificent views throughout the entire route - the Carnic High Mountain Trail is a hut tour par excellence. Over the panorama of the Sesto Dolomites and the Julian Alps, the view extends as far south as the haze of the Mediterranean. Magnificent mountain lakes and flower-filled alpine meadows alternate with exposed ridges and peaks on the tour.

The Carnic High Mountain Trail occupies a special position among the multi-day hut-to-hut tours: it runs along old routes from the First World War and has become a peaceful meeting place as the "Via della Pace", or "Peace Trail". Along the way, you will repeatedly come across the remains of former war positions.

The Carnic High Trail is divided into two sections: While the western section from Sillian to Kötschach-Mauthen mostly leads through high alpine terrain, the eastern section from Kötschach to Thörl-Maglern offers more comfy and leisurely walking across alpine meadows. Both sections can be completed in around a week.

The Rother hiking guide "Karnischer Höhenweg" is designed in such a way that all hikers can put together their own individual routes, regardless of whether they want to hike on the main route or off the beaten track. The author Evamaria Wecker provides detailed route descriptions as well as detailed information on transport links, places to stop for refreshments and accommodation and interesting sights and facts along the way. Each stage is also presented with photos, hiking maps with the route marked and altitude profiles. GPS tracks are available for download.
