Description

The Central Highlands in the heart of Scotland are characterized by the majestic mountains of the Grampian Mountains. Britain's largest continuous mountain range stretches from Loch Lomond all the way up to Inverness. The breathtaking scenery of the rugged landscape with its heather-covered mountains and deep black lakes, coupled with inaccessible moors and green forests, form a unique natural backdrop here. In the northern part of the Grampian Mountains, between Aviemore and Braemar, lies the youngest national park on the island, the "Cairngorms National Park". There are no roads leading into the national park, only around it, and so this austerely beautiful stretch of land is entirely reserved for non-motorized visitors. A paradise for nature-loving walkers who want to spend a night in the open air by the picturesque Loch Avon before climbing Scotland's second-highest peak, Ben MacDui, the next day. The almost deserted, barren valleys of the Cairngorms contrast with the almost lovely Trossachs region in the south of the Central Highlands. This is where RobRoy MacGregor became a legend. As part of the "Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park", the Trossachs are well developed for tourism and, in addition to the hikes, there are numerous excursion destinations and charming little towns such as Callander and Killin to discover, which tempt you to stay a little longer. Four different multi-day tours, from leisure hikes with overnight stays in hotels to ambitious wilderness treks, offer something for every taste. All hiking tours can be easily combined with each other, with the level of difficulty increasing from tour to tour. The route is described in detail in individual daily stages and also contains recommendations on accommodation, the best way to get to the starting point, detours and possible summit ascents along the route. The general section contains practical tips that are essential for organizing and completing the hiking tour. There is also information on how to get to Scotland, useful addresses and local information. The country with heroes such as RobRoy and Braveheart, Highlander and Harry Potter is waiting to be explored and hiked.

Anja Vogel | Conrad Stein Verlag | 1st edition 2007 | 153 pages | 14 maps | 50 color illustrations
